History of the Gardens

Charles James Packe (1726–1816) rebuilt Prestwold Hall in the 1760s and soon after created the parkland around it.

At this time, the gardens consisted of an informal lawn with shrubberies and trees to the north, east and west, with the main entrance to the Hall in the south. Standing on the northern part of the East Lawn runs a line of cedars, which were already said to be of notable size in 1780.

In 1842, following his remodelling of the house, architect William Burn turned his attention to transforming the external space, creating the gardens as we know them today. Burn added the porte cochère and entrance to the west, and created the garden that now lies to the south, with its meticulously arranged flower beds reflecting the classical symmetry of the house.
